Dimitris Lignadis

1 title Acting Sep 25, 1964 Athens, Greece

Dimitris Lignadis (Greek: Δημήτρης Λιγνάδης), born on September 25, 1964, is a prominent Greek actor and stage director who made significant contributions to the theatrical landscape of Greece. He held the position of Artistic Director at the National Theater of Greece from August 2019 until his resignation on February 6, 2021. His tenure was marked by a commitment to innovative productions, though it was abruptly overshadowed by serious allegations that surfaced in early 2021.

In February of that year, Lignadis faced multiple accusations of sexual abuse, including claims from minors. Following these revelations, he stepped down from his role, prompting Culture and Sports Minister Lina Mendoni to label him a "dangerous person" and criticize his deception of the Ministry. This statement sparked considerable controversy within the artistic community and among members of the Hellenic Actors Union.

Subsequently, Lignadis was arrested and charged with four counts of rape, leading to his pre-trial detention. In July 2022, he was convicted of two counts of rape against minors, resulting in a 12-year prison sentence. However, he was granted parole pending an appeal, a decision made by a narrow 4-3 majority in court. Lignadis's case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting issues of abuse and accountability within the arts in Greece.
