Paul Reubens (August 27, 1952 – July 30, 2023) was a multifaceted American entertainer celebrated for his iconic character, Pee-wee Herman. His journey into the world of comedy began in the 1970s when he became a member of the renowned Los Angeles improv troupe, The Groundlings. It was here that he honed his skills as both a comedian and stage performer.

In 1982, Reubens introduced the world to Pee-wee Herman through his innovative stage show, The Pee-wee Herman Show, which captivated audiences for five months in Los Angeles. The success of the show led to an HBO special that further solidified Pee-wee's status as a beloved character. Throughout the 1980s, Reubens fully embraced this persona, participating in public appearances and interviews solely as Pee-wee.

His breakout film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), directed by a young Tim Burton, became both a critical and commercial triumph, earning a dedicated following and securing its place as a cult classic. While the sequel, Big Top Pee-wee (1988), did not achieve the same level of success, it still contributed to Reubens' legacy. Between 1986 and 1990, he starred in the CBS children's show Pee-wee's Playhouse, which further endeared him to audiences and showcased his unique blend of humor and creativity. Paul Reubens' impact on entertainment remains significant, leaving behind a distinctive mark on comedy and pop culture.
