1 title Directing Feb 16, 1933 Died: Dec 08, 2022 Fukui, Japan

Yoshishige Yoshida (吉田 喜重), known as Kijū Yoshida, was a prominent Japanese filmmaker and screenwriter. After graduating from Tokyo University, he joined the Shōchiku studio in 1955. Yoshida made his directorial debut in 1960 with the film "Rokudenashi." He became a key figure in the movement referred to as the "Shōchiku Nouvelle Vague," alongside contemporaries Nagisa Oshima and Masahiro Shinoda. His films are often examined within the context of the Japanese New Wave, a movement characterized by its challenge to traditional cinema norms.

Feeling constrained by the studio system, Yoshida departed from Shōchiku in 1964 to establish his own production company, through which he created influential works including "Eros + Massacre." Over his career, which spanned from 1960 to 2004, he directed more than 20 films. In addition to his cinematic contributions, Yoshida authored several philosophical texts analyzing his artistic approach and the nature of film, including a celebrated study on the renowned director Yasujirō Ozu. Yoshida's legacy as a filmmaker and thinker remains significant in the landscape of Japanese cinema.
