Sally Wainwright

Sally Anne Wainwright OBE, born in 1963, is an esteemed English television writer, producer, and director renowned for her compelling dramas set primarily in her home region of West Yorkshire. Her storytelling often highlights strong female protagonists and is celebrated for its sharp, engaging dialogue.

Wainwright's career took off when she contributed to the iconic radio drama The Archers, before making her mark on popular television soap operas such as Emmerdale and Coronation Street during the 1990s. In 2000, she debuted her original series, At Home with the Braithwaites, which ran until 2003. After experiencing two setbacks in her mid-2000s projects, she achieved significant acclaim with the series Unforgiven in 2009, earning the Royal Television Society's Writer of the Year Award for her work.

Her subsequent projects include the critically acclaimed series Scott & Bailey (2011–2016), Last Tango in Halifax (2012–2020), Happy Valley (2014–2023), and Gentleman Jack (2019–2022). Notably, Last Tango in Halifax was awarded the British Academy Television Award for Best Drama Series in 2013, while Happy Valley secured the same honor in both 2015 and 2017.
