John Harrison embarked on his creative journey by directing music videos and serving as the first assistant director for the renowned horror filmmaker George A. Romero, notable for classics such as Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Creepshow (1982). Harrison contributed significantly to Romero's legacy by writing and directing several episodes of the iconic television series Tales from the Darkside (1983). Expanding his repertoire, Harrison co-wrote Disney's animated feature Dinosaur (2000) and adapted Clive Barker's fantasy series Abarat for the studio. In 2006, he reconnected with his mentor Romero to produce the film Diary of the Dead (2007). Harrison's action-thriller Blank Slate (2008), which he both wrote and directed, was presented as a twenty-episode micro-series on TNT that fall.

Harrison also made a mark in the horror genre with Clive Barker's Book of Blood (2009), which he wrote and directed. His adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic novel Dune (2000), which he directed, garnered an Emmy Award and was celebrated both in the U.S. and abroad.
