Lam Suet
Lam Suet (Chinese: 林雪), born on July 8, 1964, in Tianjin, China, relocated to Hong Kong in 1979 to claim an inheritance from his grandfather. Unfortunately, the funds dwindled quickly, forcing Lam to take on various odd jobs to sustain himself.
In the mid-1980s, with assistance from friends, he found work on film sets, taking on diverse roles such as lighting technician, prop master, stage manager, and script supervisor. Over time, Lam developed a passion for acting, persistently approaching directors until they granted him small parts. Two influential figures in his acting journey are Stephen Chow and director Johnnie To. Chow, who became a friend during Lam's early days in the industry, cast him in notable films like The God of Cookery (1996) and Kung Fu Hustle. Meanwhile, Lam has collaborated on over 80 films since 1996, with at least 20 projects directed or produced by To.
Renowned for his stature and comedic timing, Lam frequently portrays endearing, bumbling characters that provide comic relief in To's films. He is particularly recognized for his role as the hapless taxi driver Yip in the acclaimed movie Breaking News (2004). His notable collaborations with To, including The Mission and PTU, earned him multiple nominations for Best Supporting Actor at prestigious awards. Beyond his film career, Lam has been happily married for nearly a decade to a woman from his hometown, who is ten years his junior.
