Jack Horner

1 title Acting Jun 15, 1946 Shelby, Montana, USA

John Robert Horner, born on June 15, 1946, is a distinguished American paleontologist renowned for his groundbreaking work in dinosaur behavior, particularly for identifying Maiasaura, which provided the first substantial evidence of parental care among dinosaurs. His research has significantly shaped the understanding of dinosaur reproductive behavior and social structures.

Horner's influence extends beyond academia; he served as a technical advisor for the first five films in the Jurassic Park series, lending his expertise to ensure the dinosaurs were portrayed accurately. He even made a cameo in Jurassic World and served as a partial inspiration for the character Dr. Alan Grant, played by Sam Neill, thus bridging the gap between science and popular culture.

Although he attended the University of Montana, Horner faced challenges due to undiagnosed dyslexia and did not complete his degree. Nonetheless, his contributions to science were recognized with an honorary Doctorate in Science. After retiring from Montana State University on July 1, 2016, he transitioned to a teaching role as a Presidential Fellow at Chapman University. His departure from the Museum of the Rockies was reportedly influenced by personal circumstances, including his marriage to an undergraduate student. Horner's work continues to inspire both aspiring paleontologists and the wider public fascinated by the age of dinosaurs.
