Liz Cheney
Elizabeth Lynne Cheney (born July 28, 1966) is an accomplished American attorney and politician who represented Wyoming's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023. Serving as the chair of the House Republican Conference from 2019 to 2021, she held the prominent third-highest leadership position within the Republican Party in the House. Currently, Cheney is a Professor of Practice at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
As the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney, she has a notable political lineage. During the George W. Bush administration, she took on significant roles at the U.S. State Department, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and Coordinator for Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives. In her efforts to advocate for regime change in Iran, she led the Iran Syria Policy and Operations Group alongside Elliott Abrams.
In 2009, Cheney co-founded Keep America Safe, a nonprofit focused on national security, which espoused the Bush-Cheney administration's policies. She also made an attempt to enter the Senate race in Wyoming in 2014 against three-term incumbent Mike Enzi, although she later withdrew. Notably, her congressional seat was once held by her father from 1979 to 1989, marking a significant legacy in Wyoming politics.
