Michael Flatley
Michael Ryan Flatley, born on July 16, 1958, is an illustrious Irish American dancer, choreographer, flautist, writer, and occasional television host, renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to theatrical dance. His rise to global prominence began with the phenomenal success of shows such as Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, and Feet of Flames. Flatley captured the world's attention during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, setting the stage for his illustrious career.
Raised on the south side of Chicago by parents hailing from County Sligo and County Carlow, Flatley embarked on his dance journey at the age of 11. In 1975, he made history by becoming the first non-European resident to clinch the All-Ireland World Championship in Irish dance. Alongside his dance prowess, he is an accomplished boxer, participating in the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament, although he faced defeat in a bout against Kenneth Reed.
Flatley's musical talents also shine through his flute playing, having won the All-Ireland Competition twice. He trained under Dennis Dennehy at the Dennehy School of Irish Dance in Chicago before launching his own dance school. After a brief hiatus, he made a triumphant return to the stage in 2009 with a limited engagement of Feet of Flames in Taiwan, earning multiple standing ovations.
