William Squire (April 29, 1917 – May 3, 1989) was a distinguished Welsh actor celebrated for his work across stage, film, and television. Born in Neath, South Wales, he was the son of William Squire and Martha (née Bridgeman). Throughout his career, Squire made a significant impact in the theatrical world, gracing renowned venues such as Stratford-upon-Avon and the Old Vic. He is perhaps best remembered for stepping into the role of King Arthur in the Broadway production of Camelot, succeeding fellow Welsh actor Richard Burton.

Squire’s film career began with a notable appearance in the 1956 epic Alexander the Great, where he shared the screen with Burton. His filmography features a wide range of roles, including Thomas More in the 1969 adaptation of Maxwell Anderson's Anne of the Thousand Days, and Sir Daniel Brackley in the 1972 TV version of The Black Arrow. He lent his voice to the character of Gandalf in the 1978 animated adaptation of The Lord of the Rings and portrayed the Shadow in the 1979 Doctor Who serial, The Armageddon Factor.

One of Squire's most iconic performances was as Hunter, the superior of secret agent David Callan in the early 1970s spy series Callan, a role he inherited from Derek Bond. Additionally, he showcased his Shakespearean prowess in educational films produced by Encyclopædia Britannica, where he played Macbeth, further solidifying his legacy as a preeminent Shakespearean actor. His extensive work also included performances in the classic 1960s television series, An Age of Kings.
