Souad Massi

Souad Massi, born on August 23, 1972, in Algiers, Algeria, is a celebrated Berber singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Her musical journey commenced with the political rock band Atakor, where she gained prominence before fleeing Algeria due to multiple death threats linked to the band's politically charged lyrics. In 1999, her performance at the Femmes d'Algérie concert in Paris marked a pivotal moment in her career, leading to a contract with Island Records.

Massi's music is characterized by her acoustic guitar work and a rich blend of genres, including rock, country, and fado, intertwined with oriental influences and African rhythms. She sings in several languages, including Classical Arabic, Algerian Arabic, French, English, and Kabyle, often seamlessly weaving them together in her songs.

Raised in a modest household as one of six siblings in the Bab El Oued neighborhood, Massi nurtured her musical talents from a young age, inspired by her older brother. Her early influences included American country music, which would shape her songwriting style. After a brief stint in a flamenco band, she found her true voice with Atakor, releasing an acclaimed album and music videos during her seven-year tenure.

In 2001, she launched her solo career with the album *Raoui*, which received critical acclaim and commercial success in France. Her subsequent works, including *Deb* (2003) and *Mesk Elil* (2006), further solidified her status in the music world. Living in Paris with her two daughters, Inji and Amira, Massi continues to inspire with her profound artistry, drawing from a diverse musical palette.
