Nino Ferrer

1 title Acting Aug 15, 1934 Died: Aug 13, 1998 Genoa, Liguria, Italy

Nino Agostino Arturo Maria Ferrari, better known as Nino Ferrer, was a prominent Italian-French singer-songwriter born on August 15, 1934, in Genoa, Italy. His early years were spent in New Caledonia, where his father worked as an engineer. A Jesuit education in Genoa and Paris instilled in him a lasting disillusionment with the Church. In 1947, Ferrer began studying ethnology and archaeology at the Sorbonne while simultaneously nurturing his passions for music and art.

After his studies, Ferrer embarked on a journey around the globe aboard a freighter, eventually returning to France to fully embrace his musical calling. Influenced by jazz and blues legends such as James Brown and Ray Charles, he began his career as a double bassist in Bill Coleman’s New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, making his recording debut in 1959 with the Dixie Cats.

Ferrer’s first major breakthrough came in 1963 with the single "Pour oublier qu'on s'est aimé." His B-side, "C'est irréparable," was later transformed into the hit "Un anno d'amore" for Italian diva Mina. His popularity soared in 1965 with the whimsical hit "Mirza," followed by other comedic songs like "Cornichons" and "Oh! hé! hein! bon!"

In 1967, he achieved significant acclaim in Italy with the revolutionary soul track "La pelle nera." The song, which expressed his admiration for black music icons, became a cultural touchstone. Ferrer continued to challenge the frivolity of the music industry, often reflecting on life’s absurdities in his lesser-known works, while maintaining a complex relationship with his own commercial success until his passing on August 13, 1998.
