Imelda Marcos

Imelda Marcos, born on July 2, 1929, is best known as the widow of Ferdinand Marcos, the former dictator of the Philippines. Her name is often associated with her extravagant collection of over a thousand pairs of shoes, which became a symbol of the excesses of the Marcos regime. In 1986, the assassination of opposition leader Benigno Aquino, Jr. led to widespread protests in Manila, culminating in the People Power Revolution that ousted Ferdinand Marcos from power. Following their exile to the United States, the Marcos family settled in Hawaii, where Ferdinand later passed away.

Upon her return to the Philippines after her husband's death, Imelda Marcos worked to re-establish her political influence. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 1995, representing Leyte, and again in 2010 from Ilocos Norte. Despite facing numerous controversies regarding the family's wealth and the sources of their riches, she managed to avoid imprisonment and maintained her political presence in the country.
