Charles Monroe Schulz, affectionately known as "Sparky," was born on November 26, 1922, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Standing at 5' 11½" (1.82 m), he became a celebrated American cartoonist, writer, and producer, whose legacy is largely defined by his iconic comic strip "Peanuts." This beloved series introduced a cast of memorable characters, including the ever-optimistic Charlie Brown and the imaginative Snoopy, captivating audiences for decades.
Schulz's work extended beyond the comic pages; he was instrumental in bringing his characters to life in various animated films and television specials. Noteworthy productions include "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" (1966), "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" (1973), and the more recent "The Peanuts Movie" (2015). His influence on the world of comics is immeasurable, earning him recognition as one of the most important cartoonists in history.
Despite his immense success, Schulz faced personal challenges, including a battle with colon cancer, which he was diagnosed with in November 1999, as well as Parkinson's disease. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 12, 2000, in Santa Rosa, California. Schulz left behind a legacy of creativity and humor, along with five children: Craig, Meredith, Amy, Monte, and Jill. He was married to Jean Schulz for 27 years until his passing and previously to Joyce Halverson from 1951 to 1972.
