Isabel de Castro
Isabel Maria Bastos Osório de Castro e Oliveira (August 1, 1931 – November 23, 2005) was a celebrated Portuguese actress known for her impactful contributions to film. Born in Lisbon to José Osório de Castro e Oliveira and acclaimed writer Raquel Bastos, she was part of a literary lineage, being the granddaughter of Ana de Castro Osório and the sister of João Osório de Castro.
Castro's cinematic journey commenced with her debut in the 1946 film "Ladrão, Precisa-se!" She subsequently made a mark in Spanish cinema, notably in "Under the Skies of the Asturias," portraying Angelina Quirós, as well as in "The Pelegrín System," "Lawless Mountain," and "El cerco." Her work in Portuguese cinema included significant roles in acclaimed films such as "Francisca" (1981), "O Desejado" (1987), and "Hard Times" (1988). In the mid-1990s, she expanded her horizons to Cape Verde, featuring in "Down to Earth" (1995) and "The Island of Contenda" (1996), where she played Nha Caela, a character based on a novel by Henrique Teixeira de Sousa. Her final screen appearance was in "A Casa Esquecida" in 2004, culminating a prolific career that spanned around 50 films, along with notable performances in theater and television.
Isabel de Castro passed away from cancer in Borba, near Évora. She was married twice, first to Óscar Acúrsio in 1948 and later to Miguel Luke. Her legacy endures through her significant contributions to Portuguese and Spanish cinema.
