Gates McFadden
Cheryl Gates McFadden, born on March 2, 1949, is an accomplished American actress and choreographer, renowned for her iconic role as Dr. Beverly Crusher in the beloved television series and film franchise, Star Trek: The Next Generation. McFadden earned her B.A. Cum Laude in Theater Arts from Brandeis University before relocating to Paris, where she honed her theatrical skills under the tutelage of the famed actor Jacques LeCoq.
Prior to her Star Trek fame, McFadden primarily worked as a choreographer, contributing her talents to several Jim Henson projects. She played key roles in the choreography of films such as The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, serving as the Director of Choreography and Puppet Movement, as well as appearing in The Muppets Take Manhattan. In her professional endeavors, she distinguishes her acting under the name "Gates McFadden" and credits her choreography as "Cheryl McFadden."
In addition to her work in Star Trek, she had a brief role in Woody Allen's Stardust Memories and appeared in The Hunt for Red October, although much of her footage was edited out. McFadden initially left Star Trek after the first season due to creative differences but was invited back for the third season after the character Dr. Katherine Pulaski, played by Diana Muldaur, failed to resonate with fans. A heartfelt conversation with co-star Patrick Stewart ultimately swayed McFadden to return to her iconic role, allowing her to explore the complexities of a widow balancing career and motherhood.
