Tonya Pinkins
Tonya Pinkins, born in Chicago, Illinois, is a celebrated actress whose diverse talents span stage, television, and film. Raised in a family with strong work ethics—her father was a police officer and insurance salesman, while her mother worked for the postal service—Tonya's artistic inclinations emerged early. She pursued acting in high school at the Goodman Theatre Young People’s Program and, after a brief stint in college, chose to follow her passion for the performing arts. She later earned her undergraduate degree from Columbia College in Chicago and continued her education at Carnegie Mellon’s music theater program, alongside a year of law studies at California Western School of Law.
Pinkins is best known for her remarkable theater performances. Her portrayal of Sweet Anita in "Jelly's Last Jam" earned her a Tony Award, while she received nominations for her roles in "Play On!" and "Caroline, or Change." Other notable Broadway appearances include "Merrily We Roll Along," "The Wild Party," and "Radio Golf." Her Off-Broadway work includes a memorable turn in "The Winter’s Tale."
