Stephen Kovacevitch
Stephen Kovacevich, born on October 17, 1940, in San Pedro, Los Angeles, is a distinguished American classical pianist and conductor, renowned for his interpretations of masterpieces by Beethoven, Bartók, and Schubert. He is celebrated for his exceptional technical proficiency, clarity, and insightful musical interpretations.
Raised by a Croatian father and an American mother, he initially performed under the name Stephen Bishop after his mother remarried. However, to distinguish himself from the singer-songwriter Stephen Bishop, he adopted the name Stephen Bishop-Kovacevich and eventually shortened it to Stephen Kovacevich.
Kovacevich's musical journey began early, with his concert debut occurring at just 11 years old. By 18, he had moved to London on a scholarship to study with the esteemed Dame Myra Hess, and he has made London his home ever since. His European debut at Wigmore Hall in 1961 was a remarkable success, featuring works by Alban Berg, Bach, and Beethoven's Diabelli Variations. Following this, he toured extensively, performing in Europe, the United States, and beyond.
In addition to solo performances, Kovacevich has collaborated with renowned artists such as Jacqueline du Pré, Martha Argerich, and Steven Isserlis, showcasing his versatility in chamber music. He has also contributed to the music community by offering master classes at the Dartington International Summer School.
Kovacevich's personal life includes a marriage to novelist Bernardine Bishop, with whom he had two sons. He shares a daughter, Stéphanie, with pianist Martha Argerich, with whom he continues to perform.
