Tom Petty
Thomas Earl Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017) was a prominent American musician renowned for his work as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was the charismatic leader of the rock groups Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Mudcrutch, and he also played a significant role in the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys during the late 1980s. In addition to his band achievements, Petty enjoyed a successful solo career.
Throughout his illustrious career, Petty achieved remarkable success, selling over 80 million records globally, positioning him among the top-selling musicians in history. With the Heartbreakers, he produced numerous iconic singles, including "American Girl" (1976), "Don't Do Me Like That" (1979), "Refugee" (1980), "The Waiting" (1981), "Don't Come Around Here No More" (1985), and "Learning to Fly" (1991). As a solo artist, some of his notable tracks included "I Won't Back Down" (1989), "Free Fallin'" (1989), and "You Don't Know How It Feels" (1994).
In recognition of his contributions to the music industry, Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He received the MusiCares Person of the Year honor in February 2017, acknowledging his musical influence and charitable efforts. Additionally, Petty lent his voice to the character Lucky Kleinschmidt in the animated series King of the Hill from 2004 until its finale in 2009. Tragically, he passed away from an accidental drug overdose in 2017 at the age of 66, just one week after concluding the Heartbreakers' 40th Anniversary Tour.
