Avis Bunnage

Avis Bunnage (April 22, 1923 – October 4, 1990) was a distinguished British actress celebrated for her contributions to film, stage, and television. Born in Manchester, England, she received her early education at Manley Park Municipal School and Chorlton Central School. Before embarking on her acting career, she worked as a secretary and a nursery teacher.

Bunnage's professional journey began at the Chorlton Rep Theatre in 1947, where she honed her craft in repertory theatre. She gained widespread recognition for her role as Veronica, the wife of Rigsby, in the iconic sitcom "Rising Damp." A key member of Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, she achieved acclaim for her portrayal of Helen, the mother, in the groundbreaking play "A Taste of Honey," which marked her West End debut at Wynndhams Theatre. Bunnage also starred in "Oh, What a Lovely War!" and took on significant roles in productions such as "Sweeney Todd" and a play centered on music hall star Marie Lloyd.

In television, she appeared as Lucile Hewitt's aunt in the early episodes of "Coronation Street." Her theatrical performances included playing the mother in the musical "Billy" and Golda in "Fiddler on the Roof" opposite Alfie Bass. Bunnage was married to Derek Orchard and passed away at the age of 67 in Thorpe Bay, Essex, leaving behind a rich legacy in the performing arts.
