Samir Mallal
Samir Mallal, hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, has made a significant mark in the realm of documentary filmmaking. He is particularly recognized for his impactful works, including the acclaimed films "Discordia," "Bombay Calling," and "Nollywood Babylon."
Mallal's filmmaking journey began with "Discordia" in 2004, which he co-directed alongside fellow Concordia University alumnus Ben Addelman. This poignant documentary explores the experiences of three students in the wake of the Netanyahu Incident at Concordia University in Montreal in 2002, shedding light on the complexities of campus life and political discourse.
Following this, he collaborated again with Addelman on "Bombay Calling" in 2006. This film offers an insightful look into the lives of telemarketers in a call center in Mumbai, India, highlighting the challenges and realities of outsourced labor in a globalized economy. Both of these documentaries were produced with the support of Adam Symansky from the National Film Board of Canada.
In 2008, Mallal directed "Nollywood Babylon," a compelling exploration of the burgeoning Nigerian film industry. Co-produced with the National Film Board of Canada and the Documentary Channel, this work captures the vibrant culture and rapid growth of Nollywood, showcasing its influence both locally and internationally.
