At the age of eight, he emigrated with his family to Los Angeles, California. His diverse heritage includes both Vietnamese and Chinese roots, with his mother being of Chinese descent.

Johnny's background is steeped in the entertainment industry; his uncle, Nguyen Chanh Tin, is a recognized Vietnamese actor, and his older brother, Charlie Nguyen, directed the acclaimed film *The Rebel*. Nguyen has made significant contributions to both American and Vietnamese cinema. He is well-known for his roles in martial arts films such as *Tom-Yum-Goong* and *Cradle 2 the Grave*, and he garnered attention for his portrayal of the villain Dong Lee in the Indian film *7 Aum Arivu (7th Sense)*.

In addition to his acting career, Johnny has served as a stunt double, notably portraying Spider-Man in *Spider-Man 2* and the Green Goblin in the original *Spider-Man* film.
