Donald McAlpine ACS, ASC, born on April 13, 1934, is a distinguished Australian cinematographer renowned for his impactful contributions to film. Initially a physical education instructor in Parkes, New South Wales, McAlpine's passion for film ignited as he utilized a 16mm camera to document athletes in preparation for the Melbourne Olympic Games.

Between 1972 and 1981, McAlpine formed a significant partnership with acclaimed director Bruce Beresford, contributing his cinematographic expertise to several of Beresford's notable films. His impressive portfolio from this era includes titles such as The Adventures of Barry McKenzie, Don's Party, Money Movers, and the critically lauded Breaker Morant. He also collaborated with director Gillian Armstrong on the beloved film My Brilliant Career.

Among his many accolades, McAlpine received an Academy Award nomination for his striking cinematography in Moulin Rouge!, a testament to his artistic vision and technical skill.
