1 title Acting Mar 28, 1966 Novorossiysk, RSFSR, USSR

Sergei Bugaev, known by his artistic name Afrika, was born on March 28, 1966, in Novorossiysk, Russia. In the early 1980s, he relocated to Leningrad, where he established connections with prominent figures in the local art community, including painter Timur Novikov and musician Boris Grebenshchikov. Adopting the name Afrika, he began to carve out his own niche as an artist.

Afrika gained recognition in 1987 when he played the lead role of Bananan in the avant-garde film "Assa," directed by Sergei Solovyov, marking a significant moment in his artistic career. His work primarily encompasses performance and installation art, with a notable project in 1993 titled "Krimania." This involved an intense three-week stay in a mental health facility in Simferopol, Crimea, culminating in an exhibition designed for the hospital's patients and staff.

The project extended to a significant exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (MAK), named "Krimania: Icons, Monuments, Mazáfaka," which explored the themes of collective and individual identity for Soviet citizens in the post-Soviet era. Afrika represented Russia at the prestigious 48th Venice Biennale in 1999. Today, he resides and continues his artistic endeavors across Saint Petersburg, Miami, and New York City, leaving a lasting impact on contemporary art.
