Kurt Thomas (March 29, 1956 – June 5, 2020) was a distinguished American gymnast celebrated for his groundbreaking achievements in the sport. Notably, in 1978, he made history by becoming the first American male gymnast to secure a gold medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, a remarkable milestone in U.S. gymnastics.

Thomas represented the United States at the 1976 Summer Olympics and gained further prominence in 1979 when he became the first recipient of the James E. Sullivan Award, honoring the nation's top amateur athlete. That same year, he excelled at the World Championships, amassing six medals: gold in the horizontal bar and floor exercise, alongside silver in the all-around, parallel bars, and pommel horse events. He was anticipated to clinch a gold medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics, but the U.S. boycott prevented his participation.

In recognition of his exceptional talent, two gymnastic maneuvers were named after him: the Thomas Flair, a skill performed on the pommel horse, and the Thomas Salto, an advanced move on the floor exercise that features a tucked 1.5 backward salto with a 1.5 twist, showcasing his innovative spirit.

Kurt Thomas passed away on June 5, 2020, at the age of 64, following a stroke caused by a tear in the basilar artery in his brain stem, just weeks after his health crisis began. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of gymnasts.
