Mario Theissen

Dr. Mario Theissen, born on August 17, 1952, in Monschau, Germany, is a renowned figure in the world of motorsport, particularly for his pivotal role at BMW. He served as BMW Motorsport Director and was the team principal of BMW Sauber, the company's Formula One team, from 2005 until 2009, when the team was sold back to Peter Sauber.

After earning a diploma in mechanical engineering from RWTH Aachen University, Theissen began his career at BMW in 1977, working in the engine calculation department. He quickly advanced through various positions within the engine development division and obtained a doctorate in engineering from Ruhr University in Bochum in 1989. By 1991, he was leading Product Concepts at BMW, and he became Director of Advanced Drivetrain Development the following year. In 1994, he was promoted to Director of BMW Technik GmbH, where he also established the BMW Technology Office in Palo Alto, California, in 1998.

Theissen's tenure as BMW Motorsport Director began in April 1999, overseeing the company's Formula One initiatives, including partnerships with WilliamsF1. Under his leadership, BMW achieved significant milestones, including having the most powerful engine in F1 by 2001 and a commendable second-place finish in the Constructors' Championship in 2007. Notably, the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix saw BMW secure its first victory as a constructor. Following BMW's exit from F1 and his retirement from the company on June 30, 2011, Theissen left a lasting legacy in motorsport engineering and management.
