1 title Acting Mar 23, 1926 Died: Sep 07, 1979 Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, UK

Alan Browning, born on March 23, 1926, in England, was a distinguished actor whose career spanned several decades before his untimely death on September 7, 1979. Initially working as a reporter for a Newcastle newspaper in the 1950s, he pursued acting as a hobby at the People's Theatre. His journey in the entertainment industry took a significant turn when he moved to London to work for a news agency, which led him to Cairo, where he met his first wife, Anne, a member of the Women's Royal Naval Service (Wrens).

Encouraged by Anne, Browning transitioned to acting full-time, quickly landing a role as King John in educational films for Encyclopedia Britannica. He became a familiar face on television, appearing in series like Z-Cars, The Saint, and The Avengers, and starred as Chief Officer Steve Rettar in the 1963 ABC series Jezebel.

Browning gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Ellis Cooper in the soap opera The Newcomers (1965-1968) and is perhaps best remembered as Alan Howard on Coronation Street, a role he held from 1969 until 1973. He was married to his Coronation Street co-star Pat Phoenix, who played his on-screen wife, Elsie Tanner.

Beyond television, Browning directed and acted in theatrical productions and recorded an album of jazz standards titled "Whisky & Milk" in 1975. His extensive television credits included roles in Interpol Calling, Dr. Finlay's Casebook, and The Cedar Tree. His filmography featured significant works such as Cleopatra and Julius Caesar. Despite his struggles with health issues related to alcohol, Browning left a lasting legacy in British television and theatre.
