Kim Jong Il, born Yuri Irsenovich Kim on February 16, 1941, served as a prominent North Korean leader, assuming the role of the country's second President after the death of his father, Kim Il Sung, in 1994. His leadership continued until his own passing in 2011, after which he was posthumously named the Eternal General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK).

Emerging as the designated successor in the early 1980s, Kim solidified the Kim dynasty's grip on power. He held several key positions, including General Secretary of the WPK, Chairman of the National Defense Commission (NDC), and Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army (KPA), which ranks among the largest military forces globally.

Kim's tenure was marked by significant challenges, including a devastating economic crisis that coincided with the collapse of the Soviet Union, North Korea's primary trade partner. This period was characterized by widespread famine. In response, Kim emphasized military priorities through his Songun, or "military-first," policy, positioning the armed forces as central to societal organization. His administration also initiated economic reforms, notably the establishment of the Kaesong Industrial Park in 2003, aimed at fostering inter-Korean economic collaboration.

In 2008, Kim's noticeable absence from key public appearances raised concerns regarding his health, leading to speculation about his condition. He ultimately passed away on December 17, 2011, with his youngest son, Kim Jong Un, subsequently rising to power within the ruling party.
