Vasiliy Livanov was born in Moscow into a family deeply rooted in the performing arts. He earned the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR on November 27, 1981, followed by the prestigious recognition of People's Artist of the RSFSR on April 18, 1988. His artistic lineage includes his grandfather, Nikolai Livanov, known on stage as Izvolsky, who began his career in provincial theaters before moving to the capital. Vasiliy's father, Boris Nikolaevich Livanov (1904-1972), was a prominent actor with an impressive repertoire, showcasing around 40 roles at the Art Theater and 30 in film.

The Livanov household was frequented by notable figures such as Kachalov, Pasternak, Dovzhenko, Cherkasov, Tarkhanov, and Konchalovsky. Vasiliy attended men’s school number 170 and continued his education at the Moscow Secondary Art School from 1950 to 1954. Following his artistic schooling, he enrolled in the B.V. Schukin Theater School. In addition to honing his acting skills, he ventured into directing, creating a production of Yuri Olesha’s "Three Fat Men" as his thesis project, for which he also designed the set. The music for this performance was composed by his classmate and fellow student, Gennady Gladkov, who later became a renowned composer and collaborated with V.B. Livanov on various film, theater, and animation projects.
