Jamel Shabazz is a prominent American photographer known for his impactful work in fashion, fine art, documentary, and street style photography. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Shabazz discovered his passion for photography at the age of fifteen when he began capturing images of his friends and community. Influenced by renowned photographers like Leonard Freed, James Van Der Zee, and Gordon Parks, he sought to document the rich tapestry of African American life.

In 1980, driven by a commitment to showcase the diverse narratives of New York City, Shabazz embarked on an extensive photographic journey. His work vividly encapsulates the vibrancy of youth culture and the complexities of urban life, often set against the backdrop of the city’s streets and subway systems.

Over the past decade, Shabazz has held more than twenty solo exhibitions, including significant showcases such as “Men of Honor,” “A Time Before Crack,” and “Seconds of my Life,” which have been displayed internationally in countries including Argentina, Japan, and several European nations. His group exhibitions include prestigious venues like Art Basel in Miami and the Brooklyn Museum.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Shabazz actively mentors young photographers and has collaborated with numerous organizations to promote social responsibility through art. He has served as a teaching artist with various educational institutions and has lectured at esteemed places like the Fashion Institute of Technology and Haverford College.
