I. M. Vijayan
Inivalappil Mani Vijayan, known as I. M. Vijayan, is a distinguished former Indian footballer celebrated for his prolific career as a striker. He played a pivotal role in the Indian national team during the late 1990s and early 2000s, notably partnering with Baichung Bhutia to form a formidable attack. Vijayan’s exceptional skills earned him the prestigious Indian Player of the Year award three times, in 1993, 1997, and 1999, making him the first player to achieve this honor multiple times. His contributions to Indian football were further recognized when he received the Arjuna Award in 2003.
Vijayan's journey began humbly as a soda vendor at Thrissur Municipal Corporation Stadium in Kerala, where he earned a mere 10 paise (0.02 cents) per bottle. His talent was soon discovered, leading him to the Kerala Police club, where he quickly rose to prominence in domestic football. Known for his tenacity on the field, he became the highest-paid player in Indian club football and a key member of the national squad. In a remarkable feat, Vijayan scored one of the fastest international goals, netting in just 12 seconds during the 1999 SAF Games against Bhutan.
Throughout his illustrious career, he amassed 40 goals in 79 international matches. After retiring from professional football, Vijayan established a football academy in his hometown, nurturing the next generation of talent while also briefly returning to play for Kerala Police.
