Karena Lam Kar-Yan
Karena Lam Kar-Yan's journey into the entertainment industry began unexpectedly at the age of fifteen when a talent scout from Taiwan discovered her while she was working at her family’s restaurant in Vancouver in 1993. Encouraged by the scout, she took a leap of faith and traveled alone to Taiwan that Christmas for a singing audition, which led to a professional contract. She released her first album in 1995, followed by a second in 1999, but both achieved only moderate success.
Her career took a significant turn in 2002 with her film debut, which catapulted her to stardom. That same year, Karena appeared in three successful Hong Kong films, showcasing her acting prowess. Her standout performance in "July Rhapsody," directed by Ann Hui, earned her the Best Supporting Actress and Best New Performer awards at the 2002 Hong Kong Film Awards, while her role in "Inner Senses," directed by Lo Chi Leung, garnered her a similar accolade at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards. These achievements firmly established her as a rising star in the film industry.
In the years that followed, Karena embraced more complex and daring roles, such as her portrayal of a deranged, grotesque "phantom" in the 2005 horror film "Home Sweet Home," which once again earned her nominations for prestigious awards, further solidifying her reputation as a versatile and talented actress.
