Emanuel "Manny" Ax (born June 8, 1949) is a distinguished American classical pianist celebrated for his exceptional collaborations in chamber music, notably with esteemed artists such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinists Isaac Stern and Young Uck Kim. His career has been marked by captivating solo recitals and performances alongside major orchestras globally.

Ax’s musical journey commenced at the tender age of six when he began lessons with his father. At twelve, he furthered his studies under Mieczysław Munz at the Juilliard School. His talent quickly became apparent as he garnered accolades, including honorable mention at the VIII International Chopin Piano Competition in 1970 and third place at the Vianna da Motta International Music Competition in 1971. The turning point came in 1974 when he won the prestigious Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, receiving accolades from Arthur Rubinstein himself.

In addition to his performance career, Ax has been a vital part of the Juilliard School faculty since 1990. His achievements include the Michaels Award from Young Concert Artists in 1975 and the Avery Fisher Prize in 1979. Born into a Polish-Jewish family in Lviv, Ukraine, Ax's early experiences shaped his profound musical expression.
