Smokey Robinson

William "Smokey" Robinson Jr. stands as a prominent figure in American music, renowned for his roles as a singer, songwriter, record producer, and former executive. He is best known as the founder and lead member of the legendary Motown group, the Miracles. Under his guidance, the group began its journey in 1955 as "the Five Chimes" and achieved immense success until 1972, when Robinson decided to retire from performing with the Miracles to concentrate on his position as vice president of Motown Records. His passion for music, however, drew him back, and he launched a successful solo career just a year later.

Throughout his illustrious career, Robinson has penned and produced numerous hits that have left an indelible mark on the music industry. His contributions to the Motown sound helped shape the genre and influence countless artists. In recognition of his artistic achievements, Robinson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Additionally, in 2016, he was honored with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for his exceptional lifetime contributions to popular music. After the sale of Motown Records in 1988, Robinson departed the company in 1990, but his legacy continues to resonate in the music world.
