Clay Christiansen

1 title Acting Emery, Utah, USA

Clay Christiansen is a distinguished American organist known for his remarkable tenure with the Salt Lake Tabernacle organ and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He played a pivotal role as an accompanist for the Choir both in Salt Lake City and during its tours, while also showcasing his talents through organ recitals at both the Salt Lake Tabernacle and the Conference Center.

Born in 1949 in the quaint town of Emery, Utah, Christiansen's passion for music blossomed early. At just six years old, he performed his first piano solo, "We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet," in church. His innate gift for music led him to practice extensively, often preferring solitary play over socializing with friends. By the age of eight, he began formal piano lessons, and by eleven, he was serving as the accompanist for Sunday School and Priesthood services, as well as stepping in as a ward organist.

Christiansen holds a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, along with a Master’s and Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University of Utah, earned in 1988. His career highlights include a decade-long position as the organist at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral and at Congregation Kol Ami, a Jewish synagogue, prior to his role with the Tabernacle from 1982 until 2018.

In addition to his performance work, Christiansen is a prolific composer, renowned for his hymn "In Fasting We Approach Thee," and has a diverse catalog of choral, piano, and organ works published by various music publishers. He and his wife, Diane, are proud parents to 13 children.
