Giannis Fertis
Yiannis Fertis, born in Athens on April 21, 1938, was a celebrated Greek actor whose career spanned over five decades, encompassing theater, film, and television until his passing on April 14, 2024. As a leading figure in the performing arts since the 1960s, Fertis showcased his remarkable talent in both classical and modern works, as well as ancient dramas.
His film career began in 1961 with the feature "Who's Margarita," where he starred alongside Jenny Karezis. He gained significant recognition the following year for his portrayal of Orestes in Michalis Kakogiannis's acclaimed adaptation of "Elektra," a film that garnered 25 international accolades, including an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Fertis’s outstanding performance in the 2008 film "Slaves in Their Chains," directed by Toni Lykouresi, earned him the Best Actor Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, solidifying his status as a formidable talent in the industry.
In addition to his cinematic achievements, Fertis made a notable impact on television, appearing in over 15 series, with standout roles in "The Teacher with the Golden Eyes" and "The Notary" in 1979.
