De Sio began her ascent in the film industry with a prominent role in the 1977 RAI television film "Una donna," an adaptation of Sibilla Aleramo's novel. The following year, she appeared in the RAI series "Le mani sporche" (Dirty Hands), where she worked alongside the esteemed Marcello Mastroianni. During the production, she formed a romantic relationship with director Elio Petri, which lasted for four years until his tragic passing in 1982.
Her career truly flourished in 1983, when she delivered memorable performances in Massimo Troisi's "Scusate il ritardo" and Maurizio Ponzi's "The Pool Hustlers," the latter earning her both a David di Donatello for Best Actress and a Nastro d'Argento for Best Actress.
