Robert Castel, born Robert Adolphe Moyal on May 21, 1933, in Algiers' Bab El-Oued district, was a multifaceted talent known for his work as an actor, musician, and comedian. He initially pursued a musical career, mastering the tar and guitar while performing alongside his father, a composer and violinist who specialized in French-Arab songs. Castel's acting journey began with the Regional Center of Dramatic Art in Algiers, and he gained recognition for his role as Robert Le Bègue in the improvisational theater show "La Famille Hernandez," created by Geneviève Baïlac, which premiered in Paris on September 17, 1957.

After relocating to Paris in 1962, post-Algerian independence, Castel, along with his wife Lucette Sahuquet, debuted as a comedic duo, performing at prestigious venues like the Olympia, where they shared the stage with legends such as Frank Sinatra and Marlene Dietrich. Throughout the 1970s, he became a prominent figure in French television, famed for his sketches alongside Enrico Macias. Castel's film career flourished with over thirty appearances, including notable roles alongside Edith Piaf and Isabelle Huppert.

In 2007, he re-emerged in the spotlight through the El-Gusto project, which united diverse musicians from Algiers' past. This initiative culminated in a celebrated documentary and international performances. Castel published his autobiography, "Je pose 75 [son âge], mais je retaîtres tout," in 2008, and his final one-man show, "Nostalgérie," debuted in 2013. He passed away on December 5, 2020, at the age of 87, leaving behind a rich legacy in the arts.
