Ernest Anderson

Ernest Anderson, born in Lynn, Massachusetts, embarked on his academic journey at Dunbar High School in Washington D.C., a historic institution established in 1891 as the first public high school for African American students. He later pursued a bachelor's degree at the esteemed School of Drama and Speech at Northwestern University.

Anderson's career took a significant turn when he relocated to Hollywood, initially working in the service department. His breakthrough came when legendary actress Bette Davis intervened on his behalf, prompting an audition for the role of Perry Clay in the 1942 film "In This Our Life." During this pivotal moment, Anderson impressed director John Huston, advocating for a more dignified and emotionally resonant portrayal of his character, challenging the entrenched racist dialogue prevalent in the industry at that time.

After serving in World War II, Anderson returned to Warner Brothers, where he played a crucial role in reshaping the representation of Black performers in Hollywood, striving to infuse their roles with depth and humanity. His influential career spanned until the late 1960s, during which he made significant contributions to film. Ernest Anderson passed away in DeLand, Florida, on March 5, 2011, leaving behind a legacy of courage and transformation in the film industry.
