Maurice Costello

1 title Acting Feb 20, 1877 Died: Oct 29, 1950 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Maurice George Costello (February 22, 1877 – October 29, 1950) was a notable American vaudeville performer and an early film actor who significantly contributed to the burgeoning motion picture industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Irish immigrants Ellen and Thomas Costello, he made his film debut in 1905, notably portraying Sherlock Holmes in the groundbreaking film *Adventures of Sherlock Holmes*, marking one of the earliest serious adaptations of the iconic character.

Costello was a pioneering member of the first-ever motion picture stock company at Vitagraph, where he frequently starred alongside Florence Turner. His filmography includes memorable works such as *A Tale of Two Cities*, *The Man Who Couldn't Beat God*, and *For the Honor of the Family*. Despite taking a hiatus from the screen, he returned to acting later in his life, showcasing his resilience in adapting to the evolving film landscape.

In his personal life, Costello was married to actress Mae Costello (née Altschuk), and their legacy includes two daughters, Dolores and Helene Costello, as well as grandson John Drew Barrymore and great-granddaughter Drew Barrymore. Although he faced challenges transitioning to sound films, which diminished his leading man status, Costello continued to work in the industry, often in supporting roles, until his passing in 1950, leaving an indelible mark on early American cinema.
