Ryan Murphy has made significant contributions to the world of choral music since his appointment as associate music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on March 27, 2009. In this role, he collaborates closely with Dr. Mack Wilberg, the music director, overseeing rehearsals, concerts, tours, and the renowned weekly broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word. Additionally, Murphy conducts the Temple Square Chorale, which serves as a preparatory ensemble for new choir members.

With a rich background in choral conducting and musical theater, Murphy's career prior to his current role included directing six choirs in the Boston area, among them two prestigious ensembles at the New England Conservatory of Music. He also spent four years as choral director at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, a school known for its exceptional music program. His experience as a music director spans several notable positions, including his tenure at the Tuacahn Theatre in St. George, Utah, from 2005 to 2007, and five seasons at the Sundance Institute in Provo, Utah. His time in Boston was marked by an active performance schedule that included collaborations at the Tanglewood Summer Festival.

Murphy earned a degree in piano and organ performance and pedagogy, as well as a master’s in choral conducting from Brigham Young University. He later completed his doctorate in choral conducting at Boston University. He resides with his wife, Jennifer, and their three children.
