Akkineni Nageswara Rao, affectionately referred to as ANR, was a legendary Indian film actor and producer whose influence on Telugu cinema spanned an impressive seventy-five years. Born on September 20, 1923, he passed away on January 22, 2014. Renowned for his versatility, ANR showcased his talent in a diverse array of roles, solidifying his status as a cornerstone of the Telugu film industry.
In the early 1960s, Nageswara Rao played a pivotal role in relocating the Telugu cinema hub from Madras to Hyderabad, collaborating closely with D. V. S. Raju. This move was critical in shaping the future of Telugu films. In 1975, he established Annapurna Studios, which served as a foundation for the burgeoning film industry in Hyderabad, offering essential infrastructure for filmmakers to realize their visions.
Further cementing his legacy, ANR launched the Annapurna International School of Film and Media in 2011, aimed at nurturing the next generation of filmmakers and artists.
