Martin Koolhoven

1 title Directing Apr 25, 1969 The Hague, Netherlands

Martin Koolhoven, born Martinus Wouter Koolhoven on April 25, 1969, in The Hague, is a prominent Dutch film director and screenwriter. After graduating from the Dutch Film School in 1996, Koolhoven quickly made his mark with his 53-minute television film, Duister Licht ("Dark Light"), which garnered two nominations at the Dutch Film Festival for its provocative content featuring the slaughtering of a pig.

Koolhoven's breakthrough came with his first feature-length film, Suzy Q, also a television project, which became the most celebrated Dutch film of 1999 and launched the careers of both Koolhoven and actress Carice van Houten, with whom he frequently collaborated in subsequent projects. His debut theatrical film, AmnesiA, received a limited release in New York.

Initially known for his stylized films, Koolhoven shifted towards mainstream cinema in 2005 with the release of Schnitzel Paradise, which not only earned critical acclaim but also became the highest-grossing Dutch film of the year, showcased at various international film festivals and sold in over 20 countries.

The following year, he released Bonkers, which emerged as his most awarded film to date. Koolhoven continued his success with "n Beetje Verliefd" (2006) and the critically acclaimed Oorlogswinter (2008), based on Jan Terlouw's novel. The latter film achieved platinum status and became the top box office hit in the Netherlands during the Christmas season, even surpassing major blockbusters like The Dark Knight and Twilight. Oorlogswinter was selected as the Dutch entry for the Academy Awards, making it to the shortlist of nine films. Sony Classics subsequently distributed the film in the United States.
