Will Sampson (September 27, 1933 – June 3, 1987) was a prominent Native American actor and painter, celebrated for his contributions to both the entertainment industry and the arts. Born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Sampson, a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, stood at an impressive 6 feet 7 inches and wore size 18 EEEE shoes. His most acclaimed roles include Chief Bromden in the iconic film *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest* and Taylor the Medicine Man in *Poltergeist II*. He also made a mark on television with a recurring character, Harlon Twoleaf, in the series *Vega$*, and appeared in notable films like *Fish Hawk*, *The Outlaw Josey Wales*, and *Orca*.

Before his acting career, Sampson spent approximately two decades competing in rodeos as a skilled bronco rider. His break into acting came serendipitously when producers Saul Zaentz and Michael Douglas sought a large Native American actor for *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest*. A rodeo announcer recommended Sampson, leading to his casting despite his lack of prior acting experience.

In addition to his film and television work, Sampson was an accomplished artist. His significant painting, which portrays the Ribbon Dance of his Muscogee heritage, is housed in the Creek Council House Museum in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and his artwork is featured online by The Kvskvnv Association, showcasing his enduring legacy in both the arts and Native American representation.
