Leonid Semenovich Kanevsky, born on May 2, 1939, in Kiev into a Jewish family, is a celebrated actor known for his contributions to theater, film, and television across the Soviet Union, Russia, and Israel. His mother, a piano student at the Kiev Conservatory, left her studies when she married and moved to the Caucasus. Leonid, alongside his elder brother Alexander, grew up in a culturally rich environment.

At the age of 17, Kanevsky moved to Moscow to pursue acting at the Shchukin College, studying under Vera Konstantinovna Lvova. His professional career began at the Moscow Lenin Komsomol Theater from 1960 to 1967 before he joined the Moscow Theater on Malaya Bronnaya, where he performed until 1991. His film career kicked off with a small role in "Forty Minutes Before Dawn" (1963), but he gained widespread recognition as police major Alexander Tomin in the popular series "The Investigation is Conducted by Experts." Other notable performances include a comedic role in "Diamond Hand" and portraying the haberdasher Bonacieux in "D'Artagnan and Three Musketeers."

After emigrating to Israel in 1991, he co-founded the Gesher Drama Theater in Tel Aviv, which features Russian-speaking actors. He later hosted the game show "The Ninth Shaft" and currently presents the documentary series "The Investigation Was Conducted..." on NTV. Over his extensive career, Kanevsky has appeared in more than fifty films and shows, including voice work in "Cars 2" as Finn McMissile. A distinguished member of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, he was honored as an Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1984 and actively participates in the Public Council of the Russian Jewish Congress.
