Gary McCormick stands out as a prominent figure in New Zealand's cultural landscape, known for his diverse talents as a poet, television and radio host, debater, and storyteller. His journey into poetry began in 1968, leading to the publication of several notable collections, including *Gypsies* (1974, with Jon Benson), *Naked and Nameless* (1976), *Scarlet Letters* (1980), and *Lost at Sea* (1995). Additionally, McCormick authored *Performance—A Guide to the Performing Arts in New Zealand* (1979) and the humorous *Honey, I Blew Up the Atoll* (1995, with Scott Wilson), which offered a satirical take on the life of French politician Jacques Chirac. He has collaborated extensively with fellow poet Sam Hunt.

McCormick gained recognition in television with the documentary *Raglan by the Sea*, which earned the Documentary of the Year award due to his unique and entertaining approach. He later hosted the series *Heartland*, which explored the lives of residents in small New Zealand towns, featuring memorable characters like the quirky Chloe Reeves from Wainuiomata. In the late 1980s and early 90s, he became a familiar face in Mitre 10 advertisements.

In 1997, he was honored as New Zealand Entertainer of the Year. His eclectic career includes roles such as a gardener at Porirua Hospital and an MC at the Sweetwaters Music Festival. Currently, McCormick co-hosts a radio program on More FM in Christchurch and appears regularly on TVNZ's *Good Morning* show.
