Norman Ferguson was born in 1902 on the East Side of New York City. His childhood was marked by playful antics around the family’s saloon on Second Avenue, often leading to playful encounters with the local bartender. At just ten years old, he began selling newspapers on Fifth Avenue, initially dreaming of becoming a firefighter. However, his move to Brooklyn opened up new possibilities, and he found himself drawn to the idea of becoming a cowboy instead.

Due to an administrative error, Ferguson was transferred from public school to high school in Brooklyn. Surprisingly, he excelled as a stenographer, although his frequent spelling errors led him to switch careers and pursue art. His talent for drawing soon caught the attention of the animation industry.

In the late 1920s, Ferguson relocated to California, where he became an integral part of the Walt Disney Studios team. He played a significant role in the development of Mickey Mouse, one of the most iconic characters in animation history. Ferguson’s artistic contributions were pivotal during this transformative period for Disney, and he garnered acclaim for his work. His legacy includes not only his contributions to beloved animated films but also his ability to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing industry.
