Tony Galento
Tony Galento, popularly known as "Two Ton," was a larger-than-life figure in the world of boxing, renowned for his love of cigars and his unconventional training regimen that included beer, hamburgers, and spaghetti. He made his mark as a heavyweight contender, captivating fans with his vibrant personality.
Dominic Anthony Galento was born on March 12, 1910, in Orange, New Jersey. His nickname stemmed from a memorable incident when he arrived at a boxing venue just in time for a fight after delivering ice with his truck. Upon seeing him, his manager inquired about his whereabouts, to which Galento humorously responded, "I had two tons of ice to deliver on my way here." Thus, the most entertaining figure in boxing had made his entrance.
Galento was notorious for his rough style in the ring, employing head-butts, low blows, and elbows to gain an advantage over his opponents. He was one of the toughest competitors in boxing history, achieving victories over notable fighters such as Lou Nova, Al Ettore, and Nathan Mann, which ultimately led him to a shot at the heavyweight title. He became widely recognized as a prominent member of Joe Louis' infamous "Bum of the Month Club." Galento achieved legendary status when he knocked Louis down in the second round of their championship match, prompting Louis to acknowledge him as possibly the most formidable opponent he ever faced.
