Sofia W.D. is a significant figure in Indonesian cinema, recognized for her diverse talents as an actress, director, and producer. She began her artistic journey during the Japanese occupation by attending Andjar Asmara's theater school. Sofia made her film debut in 1948 with "Air Mata Mengalir di Tjitaroem," adopting the stage name Sofia Waldy. Following her divorce from her first husband, S. Waldy, she married acclaimed actor W.D. Mochtar and transitioned to using the name Sofia W.D. in 1964.
Throughout her illustrious career, Sofia emerged as an award-winning actress, starring in over 100 films. Her influence extended beyond acting, as she became one of Indonesia's pioneering female directors with her 1962 horror film "Badai-Selatan" ("Southern Storm"), which garnered a nomination for the prestigious Golden Berlin Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
In addition to directing, Sofia was actively involved in producing, writing, and even handling the camera for various projects. She played a crucial role in founding and managing several production companies, including Film Capital, Libra Film, and Dirgahayu Jaya Film, contributing significantly to the development of the Indonesian film industry.
