Esther Rolle
Esther Elizabeth Rolle (November 8, 1920 – November 17, 1998) was a distinguished Bahamian American actress celebrated for her impactful performances on television. She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Florida Evans, first appearing as the housekeeper on the CBS sitcom Maude from 1972 to 1974. Rolle’s character was so beloved that it was spun off into the successful series Good Times, which aired from 1974 to 1979. Her exceptional work on Good Times earned her a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy in 1976.
Rolle was instrumental in shaping her character, advocating for the inclusion of a father figure on the show, ultimately leading to the introduction of James Evans, played by John Amos. Despite their 19-year age difference, the two actors shared a strong on-screen chemistry. Rolle was concerned that the show's direction veered away from serious themes, particularly with the rise of J.J. Evans, portrayed by Jimmie Walker. Her dissatisfaction with the show's evolution resulted in her departure after the third season, although she returned for the final season. In 1979, she received an Emmy Award for her performance in the television film Summer of My German Soldier.
Throughout her career, Rolle also made guest appearances, including a notable role in an episode of The Incredible Hulk. In the 1990s, she surprised her Maude co-star Bea Arthur on RuPaul’s VH-1 talk show and appeared in various psychic hotline commercials, famously saying, “Tell them Esther sent you.”
